Drumming Programs
From preschool to university, we have drumming programs to inspire young people at every stage. Community drum circles are great way to engage people of all ages and abilities.
Preschool
Our 1-hour preschool drumming program is specifically designed to introduce younger children to the different sounds and possibilities of African drums. Children are typically split into 3 groups—each group is given a short presentation and then those who are interested have the chance to try the drums for themselves. The total length per group is about 20 minutes.
Kindergarten–5th Grade
For elementary school students, we offer a 1-hour program that can be tailored to the needs of your class. The program typically starts with a presentation and then provides the opportunity for students to experience the instruments for themselves. The length of each section will vary depending on the age and interest level of the class.
6th–12th Grade
Our program for 6th to 12th graders adds depth to the learning experience. Students are introduced to a variety of different drums and percussion instruments from around the world. This class can be 1 hour or longer and can involve more or less playing time depending on the group’s level of experience with music. Those who are interested may learn how to play the parts of a traditional rhythm.
College and University
At the college and university level, we offer hands-on programs and performance workshops for musicians and non-musicians alike. Students have the opportunity to play a song together, learning how all the different parts interlock to create a tapestry of sound. We'll also discuss the history of the rhythms and the stories behind them, as handed down by masters of the craft. This program can be done as a single workshop or over multiple dates.
All our classes are taught by Clifford Koufman, an educator and performer with over 20 years of experience working with children of all ages. Clifford has studied drums in West Africa with some of the region’s most acclaimed master drummers, and he integrates what he has learned with his own created rhythms to help young drummers get a feel for the traditional music.
We come to your school and provide all the instruments needed.
